How Contact Lens Exams Work

Before prescribing contact lenses, our eye doctor will determine what level of vision correction you need. Refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism, are diagnosed by measuring how the eyes focus when a series of different lenses are placed in front of them. Our optometrist uses a phoropter or an automated instrument to take these important measurements. During this exam, we can determine if you’re a good candidate for contact lenses. This exam is different from a regular exam, where we check your eye health, eye functioning, and vision.

Contact lens exams are necessary, because eyeglass prescriptions are different from contact prescriptions. An improper fitting can damage your eyes. Once we provide you with the correct fit from our eye doctor, we can help you decide which contact lenses suit your eye health best.

Corrective Lenses

After determining any refractive errors that you may have, our doctor of optometry will work with you to determine which contact lenses are best for your lifestyle. Contact lenses are available in either soft or rigid gas permeable form. These rigid gas permeable lenses are comfortable and provide great airflow to the eye, which is great for those that may have increased intraocular pressure.

Custom soft lenses can be used for many conditions. They’re great for those with astigmatism, nearsightedness, or farsightedness. Specialized contact lenses, including bifocal contact lenses, are also available for patients with special eye conditions. We also offer cosmetic lenses that can change the color of your eyes.
